Fall break is quickly approaching, and if you want to plan a trip without breaking the bank, you’ve come to the right place.

Although Prague is at the center of Europe, offering students many accessible travel options, many still struggle to cover trip expenses due to inefficient planning.

“When I first arrived in Prague for my study abroad, I was planning on traveling as much as I can, but my bank account had other plans,” AAU student Sophia Orr said.

No matter your destination or mode of travel, utilize these simple tips to save money.

Tip #1: Create a reasonable budget for yourself before you begin planning. This way, you have a set amount of funds to base decisions on, and you can prevent plans from becoming unrealistic.

Tip #2: Use a private browser, like incognito, when booking transportation. This prevents companies from tracking your searches and increasing or showing higher prices when you return to the same listing multiple times. It also prevents companies from using pre-existing background information to list a higher price from the initial search.

Tip #3: Search for transportation on budget-friendly websites like Omio or Skyscanner. These platforms offer a variety of reasonably priced options thanks to their comprehensive searches and multi-city routes. If you have not yet chosen a destination, Skyscanner allows you to view the cheapest options for your travel dates.

Tip #4: Use Hostelworld to find affordable accommodations. Hostelworld caters to young, budget-conscious travelers, so try to find a hostel with a fun common space to meet other travelers during your stay. Hostels can vary greatly, so make sure to research thoroughly and read reviews.

Tip #5: Don’t be afraid to use public transportation in new cities. Before your trip, research whether public transportation is accessible. Ubers and Bolts can add up quickly, so familiarize yourself with the local transit system for a cheaper and more authentic experience.

Tip #6: Be mindful of where you’re eating. Many restaurants, especially in crowded areas, may be tourist-traps. Seek out more authentic local cuisine- it’s often much more reasonably priced. Don’t hesitate to ask locals for their favorite spots. If available, try street food; it’s a great way to explore cheap local food.

Good luck planning your affordable yet memorable fall break trip!
