AAU students flooded Café des Taxis an hour in advance to snag the best seats at Joel Imhoof’s first Trivia Night of the semester, exceeding the Student Council’s expectations as all drink tickets were snatched even before every team was able to arrive.
The night kicked off with Imhoof revealing his recent collaboration with The Inquizition, a highly anticipated trivia podcast averaging 4,000 listens per episode, titled “A Genius of Goats.” When asked about this opportunity, Imhoof reminisced about the beginning of his quiz-master journey with The Globe Pub nearly ten years ago, fulfilling his love of connecting people in a non-virtual space where everybody can both learn and laugh.
“For a few years from 2015-2018, I ran semester-long trivia leagues at The Globe for students from universities all across Prague. We had over 100 students participating some nights! So when I was asked to run a quiz for spirit week here at AAU, I jumped at the chance,” Imhoof said.
This session, themed “All the Ologies,” consisted of everything from astrology to world cinema to “meme”-ology, with the special round focusing on Mexico-related questions.
The resounding success of the trivia nights came with a cost, as Imhoof shared some insight on the time, effort and thought that were put into the preparation for the quizzes.
“I do feel the need to live up to expectations- the hardest thing for me is trying to write a quiz for such a culturally diverse group of people. I know as an American I have an inherent bias about what’s interesting and ‘quiz-worthy’, even though I’ve lived here for over 20 years,” Imhoof said.
As the night came to an end, The Kids Table was revealed to have won first place with 30 points, earning them a CZK 250 coupon to the AAU merch store and a surprise bonus-prize of two tickets to the Undergrad x Underground party. Second place winners Sauder Sanchizas closed in with just a two-point difference and all members received a CZK 100 Café Des Taxis voucher each. Coming in third was Join Run Club with 25 points, rewarding them a free round of drinks.
We’ll have to wait until the next trivia night to see what the fourth place team, The Quizzards of Oz, have chosen for the specialty round’s subject. Until then, Imhoof has yet to disclose the theme for the next Trivia Night.
