From classic horror flicks to carefree comedies, AAU students share their top fall films to help capture the nostalgic and spooky spirit of the season.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) is a Halloween animated staple for many. The film offers a heartwarming story that’s “short and easy to watch,” said Ilsa Erickson. “It brings a wave of nostalgia every time I watch it, as my dad made my brother and I watch all the Charlie Brown movies growing up”
Kyra Aronoff recommends a Tim Burton classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). “It’s controversial, some people think it’s only a Christmas movie, but I think it fits perfectly for both seasons,” said Kyra. Regardless of its Christmas or Halloween affiliation, Jack Skellington’s adventure between the two makes it a popular choice for both fall and winter.
For a slightly darker turn, Coraline (2009) is a popular choice among students, including Rylee McGinnis, for its eerie and whimsical feel. The movie follows a young girl who discovers a parallel universe mirroring her own, embarking the viewer on a journey through unsettling twists that make it fall’s unique blend of chilling mysticism.
David Bowie’s Labyrinth (1986) stands out for its surrealism and darker undertones, making it a fantastical experience, captivating for fall nights.
Riley Kramer suggests Disney’s Monsters University (2013) for a lighthearted, family-friendly option, or The Blair Witch Project (1999) for a chilling horror experience—perfect for Halloween fright nights and a real scare.
Rebecca Vilsmeier’s taste in fall films spans a wide range of genres, including the slasher Scream (1996), which blends suspense and self-aware humor, as well as Scary Movie 2 (2001), an over-the-top comedy filled with outrageous parodies. Dead Poets Society (1989) is a film she admires for its emotional depth. “It’s a classic and fits the autumn season; especially if you want a good cry,” said Rebecca.
Whether searching for an eerie tale, magical adventure, thrilling mystery, or thought-provoking film, these are some of the best movies to create the perfect atmosphere for cozy fall nights.
