While some AAU students celebrated Valentine’s Day with their partner at a fancy restaurant or at a cozy galentine’s gathering, many attended the dimly lit Café Des Taxis for a night of drinks, hair tinsel, and mingling.
Many were skeptical that the combined back to school and Valentine’s Day party wouldn’t draw a crowd. Yet by 21:00, the cafe brimmed with students and café staff decked in pink, white, and red.

“I thought it could be fun to go with friends,” said first year AAU student Angel Nagel. “I didn’t really expect anything, but I got to make a Valentines Day card.”
The back of the café featured a Valentine activity table, displaying packages of hair tinsel laid out in front of a how-to guide, scattered colored paper ready to be cut for Valentines, and boxes of condoms populating any empty space.
Some students decided to try their luck with the hair tinsel, though few could really get the hang of it.
“I watched as people attempted to put tinsel in their hair when I arrived,” said first year AAU student Amy Peak. “I thought I would volunteer to help, because I had previously learned how to apply tinsel in my hair school.”
Speakers played music all night long, featuring everything from Italy’s National anthem to the classic country tune, Delta Dawn, by Tanya Tucker.
“It was fun, but I thought there would be more dancing,” said first year AAU student Yaroslava Bezliepkina.
Although the dedicated dance-floor space was mostly used for talking and picture taking, AAU students seemed to enjoy passing the holiday and kicking-off the semester.
